“Perfectionism is paralysis.”
“Who wrote that?”
“I just made it up.”
This was my morning. Talking to two artists, one I went to prom with and the other I’m dating. I introduced them so they could make a music video together. A special moment for me, connecting two people I love from different parts of my own life.
Last week I had dinner with my dad. We talked about this god awful play I wrote when I was 27. It was a play I had to write so I could write the next play. Nothing really happened in it. It was a breakup in real time, where five different actors played the two characters, exploring the power dynamics of identity. It makes sense to me when I look at my body of work that I wrote this play. The themes are all still consistent. But the only reason I can see that is because this play sits within a body of work. I had to write and write and write in order to see what themes I wind and weave through, around, and within. I had to write and write and write in order to step back and see what most interests me. I had to write and write and write a lot of garbage.
