What is consent?

  • Consent is an ongoing, practical approach to communication; a mode of checking in with yourself and others about limitations, capacity, and resources.

  • Consent is a practice of deep listening, not just for words, but also for body language, gaze, prosody and other forms of often unconscious information, and acting based on all that information and being willing to adapt to it, as opposed to continuing with your intention, goal, or motive.

  • A path towards knowing yourself.

  • It is a language and can be embodied.

  • Embodiment = fluency.

What is consent not?

  • A checklist, rules, or a set of questions.

  • A way to control other people. (More on this soon…)

  • A way to get out of doing stuff you don’t wanna do.

  • A tool of punishment. (More on this soon…)

  • Something you can ever do perfectly.

  • Permission.
